PROFIBUS-DP is open for field devices of any manufacture. Siemens supports the connection of other field devices to PROFIBUS-DP by making their ASICs available on the open market and by providing technical advisory services.

Application

PROFIBUS - the bus system for communication in small cell networks and with field devices - is based on the European Standard EN 50 170, Volume  2, and has gained worldwide acceptance in the area of field applications.

Meeting the requirements acc. to EN 50 170, the PROFIBUS provides openness for the integration of standard components of other manufacturers.

For the different demands and applications in the field and cell area, the following three protocol profiles are available:

PROFIBUS-DP

PROFIBUS-DP stands out by fast cyclic communication at small data quantities. Data transfer rates of up to 12 Mbps are possible.

The field bus PROFIBUS-DP allows the communication of distributed peripherals ET 200, operator control and monitoring equipment, as well as of field devices with programmable controllers.

In addition, the entire programmable controller can be commissioned, tested and diagnosed via the field bus.

Transmission Technology

Siemens offers a comprehensive range of PROFIBUS network components for electrical and optical transmission.

Electrical network

The electrical network uses a shielded, twisted two-wire line. The RS 485 interface is operated with voltage differences. This is the reason why it is more resistant to interference. The individual stations are connected either via a bus terminal or a bus connector.

Optical network

The optical fiber variant is resistant to electromagnetic interference and suited for long distances. Either plastic or glass optical fiber can be used. The stations are connected either via an optical bus terminal or via Optical Link Modules (OLM).

Mixed network

Mixed structures consisting both of an electrical and an optical network are possible. The transition between the two media is realized by means of OLM.
